How does the battery affect the life of the UPS power supply

Time:2018-07-13        Read

According to the statistics during the maintenance work of the UPS power supply, it can be concluded that for the backup UPS power supply, the fault caused by the battery exceeds 50% of the total failure; for the online UPS, because its circuit design is reasonable, especially with the The development of science and technology, most of them have adopted integrated, modular, intelligent UPS power supply, and the configured backup capacity is relatively large, so the failure caused by the power supply is very small, compared with the battery pack Induced failures rose to more than 60%. It can be seen that the correct use and maintenance of the battery are the key factors to extend the battery life and reduce the UPS power failure rate.

"Simply put, the battery has three major characteristics: large scale, high cost, and high consumption. All you can do is to find ways to extend the life of the battery, which in fact increases the availability of the data center. Here is the data center equipment manager We have four measures to extend the life of UPS battery in their data center.

Choose a Moderate UPS Battery for Your Data Center

In most data centers, the UPS can fully charge the battery in 20 minutes. This is called high-load charging. Compared with lower-load charging, high-load charging panels are thinner and more numerous. However, the service life of high- load batteries is often shorter.

There are many other factors to consider when choosing a UPS battery, such as average life, voltage specifications, front-end control, incidental costs, and other considerations. In addition, data center managers need to consider other potential issues, such as battery sealing and internal connections.

Install, operate and maintain batteries properly

Incorrect installation and maintenance will shorten the battery life. The so-called good maintenance measures are to provide good ventilation for the battery. The temperature should be controlled at about 77 degrees Fahrenheit as much as possible. At the same time, the temperature of the air reaching the batteries in all battery packs should be about 3 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, the battery should also be ensured. Some batteries in the group do not age much faster than others.

Why is this? Mixing batteries with different use times and different internal resistances will speed up the aging process. Periodic inspection of the battery can solve a variety of problems such as loose connection and poor sealing of the injection battery, and these problems can cause equipment to be corroded and even cause a fire.

In addition, data center managers should also pay attention to the discharge status of the battery at any time. If an empty battery is not charged within 48 hours, the battery will basically be scrapped. Over-discharging the battery will cause the problem of repeated charging failure, and over-discharging will also reduce the service life of the battery.

Monitor UPS battery capacity

Affected by corrosion and other factors, the internal resistance of the battery will gradually increase. When the increase reaches 30%, it should be replaced. Through the capacity test, this problem is easy to find. As most manufacturers say, when the capacity of a battery drops to 80% of its original capacity, it should be replaced. When users test the performance and capacity of their batteries, they should be based on IEEE standards, preferably IEEE1180 or IEEE450.

Regular charge and discharge

The UPS has been in a floating charge state for a long time without a discharge process, which is equivalent to being in a "storage standby" state. If this state continues for too long, it will cause the battery to fail due to storage for too long. This is mainly manifested by an increase in the internal resistance of the battery, which can reach several ohms in severe cases. At room temperature, the available capacity of the battery after one month of storage is about 97% of its rated value. If it is not used for 6 months, its use capacity becomes 80% of the rated capacity. If the storage temperature is increased, its usable capacity will be further reduced. Therefore, it is recommended that users should intentionally interrupt the mains input every other month to allow the UPS to work in a state where the battery provides energy to the inverter. However, this kind of operation should not be too long, and it can be discharged for 10 minutes at about 30% of the rated output of the load.

Reduce deep discharge

The service life of the battery is closely related to the depth of its discharge. The lighter the load of the UPS, the greater the ratio of the battery's available capacity to its rated capacity when the mains power supply is interrupted. When the UPS shuts down automatically because the battery voltage is too low, the battery is discharged deeper. In practical applications, the way to reduce the deep discharge of the battery is: when the mains power supply is interrupted and the battery is used to supply power to the inverter, when the UPS power supply alarms, it means that the battery is in a deep discharge state, and emergency treatment should be performed immediately to shut down the UPS. If it is not necessary, generally do not let the UPS work until the battery voltage is too low and automatically shut down.

Charging when using electric valley

For users who have been in the state of low-voltage power supply for a long time or frequent power outages, in order to prevent the battery from being damaged prematurely due to insufficient long-term charging, the battery should be fully utilized during the valley of power use (such as late night time) to ensure that the battery Sufficient charging time after each discharge. Generally, after the battery is deeply discharged, it takes at least 10-12h to recharge to 90% of the rated capacity. Try to keep the battery fully charged.

Pay attention to the choice of charger

Maintenance-free sealed lead-acid batteries for UPS cannot be charged with SCR-type fast chargers. This is because such a charger will cause the battery to be in a severe state of charge with both transient overcurrent charging and transient overvoltage charging at the same time. This state will greatly reduce the available capacity of the battery, and in severe cases will cause the battery to be scrapped. When using a UPS with a constant voltage cut-off charging circuit, be careful not to adjust the battery voltage too low to protect the operating point from being too low, otherwise overcurrent charging may easily occur during the initial charging stage. It is best to use a charger with both constant current and constant voltage to charge it.
